The MSLU Confucius Institute is established in partnership between MSLU and the Beijing University of Foreign Languages (BUFL). Confucius Institutes (CIs) are set up all over the world on the initiative of the Office of Chinese Language Council International connected with the government of the People's Republic of China.
At present, there are more than 500 CIs in 134 countries. The first Confucius Institute opened in Seoul, South Korea, in 1994. Today, CIs function in the USA, Canada, Mexico, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, India, Turkey, UAE, Argentina, Brazil and many other countries. The aim of these non-governmental educational organizations is to encourage mutual understanding between peoples and to promote Chinese history, culture, philosophy, customs and traditions around the world.
Apart from teaching the Chinese language, Confucius Institutes host lectures, film shows, exhibitions and meetings with outstanding Chinese artists, scholars, politicians and business people. Successful students of Chinese who pass the HSK examination are rewarded with free study placements in China for up to 1 year.
The Russian Federation has 18 Confucius Institutes – in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Volgograd, Nizhny Novgorod, Ryazan, Kazan, Vladivostok, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk and other cities. Moscow's CIs are affiliated with the Moscow State University, Moscow State University of the Humanities, and the Moscow State Linguistic University.
The Confucius Institute at MSLU was opened on May 31, 2011 and a month later it was already hosting the Moscow regional stage of the "Chinese Bridge" 10th international Chinese proficiency competition for college students. In May 2012, it was the venue of the first Russian final of that competition, sponsored by MSLU and the Chinese Embassy in Russia.
The Confucius Institute honorary certificate
One of the main purposes of the Confucius Institute is teaching Chinese to all those willing to study it. We offer a three-level programme for beginners and continuing students of Chinese.
The two-year programme for beginners is called "Basic Chinese". Those who complete it will be able to communicate with native speakers of the language on everyday topics and will have mastered the fundamentals of Chinese grammar.
In the third year, this is followed by a course of "Chinese for Specific Purposes" to allow students to communicate on professional subjects such as business, the humanities, etc.
The academic year is made up of two 4-month semesters. The student classroom workload is 24 academic hours per month (i.e., 96 acad. hrs per semester, or 192 acad. hrs per year).
Classes are held twice a week for 3 academic hours at a time. Classes are taught by experienced MSLU or Chinese teachers. Tuition fees are charged.
Both Chinese language students and the general public are invited to attend lectures and talks devoted to Chinese history, culture, philosophy and economy, to view films and exhibitions, participate in contests and attend tea ceremony and calligraphy lessons.
The MSLU Confucius Institute is the only designated site in Moscow for the HSK and HSKK international Chinese proficiency examinations. In 2014 it was recognized as one of the best sites in the world, in 2015 it ranked second in Europe.
The next HSK and HSKK international Chinese proficiency examinations will take place on October 16, 2016.
Registration: August 16 to September 16, 2016.
